BTech Projects : An open letter to all Universities and lectures

This is an open letter to all Universities and Lectures . I was going through the white paper by acquia building enterprise social communities using drupal. Though I know Dries Buytaert was the man behind Drupal, I was not aware Drupal began as a student project at University of Ghent, Belgium, in 2000. Guys did you noticed what I was pointing to ? Yes it began as a student project.

Every BSC computer science , MCA, BE / BTech will be having final year projects . I have done my BTech from Calicut University Institute of Engineering and Technology (in short CUIET ) which came under the curriculum of The University of Calicut. We too was having mini projects and main projects .

The lectures prohibits not to do the same projects done in the previous years. This may be for not to copy the same code and present without knowing what the code base is. Some people especially girls have a great presentation skill than doing it. But the fact is the Lectures know their students who are brilliant in coding during the practical labs . So I don't know why they are not allowing to do the same project . We cannot invent anything new within a short time , as there are limitations in time . The seventh and eigth semesters will be the busiest one in our BTech life with seminars, projects , back papers if any and even more . So in the course of time , we cannot invent anything new , but we can do something innovative . So innovation, that should be motivated and not telling the project is done . Invention needs lots of time and research , but for innovation we must learn some project and try to modify it with the limitation it has .

For eg : Building a CMS framework should be allowed. But it should not be simple guest book ( guest book can also come under CMS, as its content management ) or something like that . I meant like the projects wordpress, drupal , joomla , maboo, aliro ( I came to know about this project after reviewing a book from packt ) , modx, silverstripe, typo3 etc . There is something that we should learn, so that after completing the professional BTech even if you have not got a job in a big MNC like wipro , infosys, tcs, google , microsoft etc you can earn a living . Even though we may have not build a CMS framework , we should atleast be capable of building a website using one of this following w3c standards .

So universities and lectures kindly please make the necessary changes in the projects . Students may come with new projects but, it will be mostly the swet of some other person ( They often spend 1000's of money and buy that ) . So there is no use of doing such a one.

Guys, I can pont you some projects that will help you sometime , every project needs flexibility . So never forget it .

1 ) Building a CMS framework which you can extend easily.

2 ) Building a shopping cart like Magento ( See the features of magento ).

3 ) A job portal like Naukri , Monster etc

4 ) A matrimonial site

The first two will defnitely help in your future :) , so never forget to learn those even if you are not allowed to build it.

Hmmm... very true...
I still remember the projects I did. 1st one a social n/w site was done by me myself. But in major project the teacher forced us to do an embedded one(we are CSE). We completed the project but neither WE nor the teacher knew what we did...
